European Day of Languages 2021

EUNIC Netherlands, the Directorate-General for Translation of the European Commission, and the OBA Amsterdam are teaming up once again to celebrate the European Day of Languages! Join us for an engaging Speak-Dating experience, introduced by a Talk Show on the ‘Future of Living’, with international thinkers and authors from all over Europe.

The European Day of Languages is an internationally celebrated day that promotes the rich linguistic diversity of Europe. While this day aims to draw attention on the numerous languages spoken in Europe, it strives to emphasise the value and advantage of learning new languages.

To celebrate this precious heterogeneity, EUNIC Netherlands, the Directorate-General for Translation of the European Commission, and OBA Amsterdam are collaborating to host a Talk Show where experts from literature to architecture will discuss over sustainability in the multi-faceted European setting, followed by Speak-Dates with native speakers from every side of the continent.

During the Talk Show in OBA Theatre, a few authors from the EuropeReadr project and other international guests with different professional background will discuss a common theme: the ‘Future of Living’. Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to discover new languages, spot peculiar accents, find out more about linguistic minorities, and challenge yourself during a Speak-Date activity with enthusiastic native speakers from Ireland to Malta, from Estonia to Turkey. Our international speakers will wait for you in OBA Café, and tell you all you want to know about their language, local habits, cooking traditions, fun facts, and much more.

In order to bring you the best of the international linguistic variety of Amsterdam, we organised different sessions of speak-dates: first session 19:00-19:45; second session 19:45-20:30. All you have to do is to register (for free) for your preferred time via the dedicated links on OBA’s website, and come to Amsterdam Central Library on Wednesday, September 22, to enjoy a live cultural experience.

Are you willing to participate to both Talk Show and Speak-Date, but you don’t know what to choose? We got you covered. Use this link to register for the Talk-Show on the Future of Living from 19:00 to 20:00; we organised a third session of speak-dates from 20:30 to 21:15, entirely dedicated to those who attended the Europe Readr Kick-Off event earlier. (The third session of speak-dates does not require registration via OBA website, as the registration for the Talk-Show will grant you the access to the Speak-Date as well).

Come to OBA to enjoy two of the greatest EUNIC Netherland’s projects of 2021, and to immerse yourself in international literature and multilingualism.
