ZATYSHOK Gezelligheid – make your own Pavuk (a Ukrainian-style wintertime decoration)
2 December 2023 @ 16:00 - 19:00
Are you an artist or cultural professional and want to learn more about Pavuk, the Ukrainian straw art? Join this cosy workshop and international exchange on cultural heritage.
On Saturday, December 2nd, from 16:00-19:00, we cordially invite to you take part in a workshop facilitated by the Ukrainian Cultural Center and School “Dzherelo”, hosted by our partner Goethe-Institut Amsterdam, Herengracht 470, where you will get to interact with Ukrainian artists, cultural professionals, and researchers residing in the Netherlands.
In an inviting atmosphere, over coffee and Ukrainian snacks, the participants will first learn how to make basic building blocks of a Ukrainian-style straw mobile pavuk (a spider in Ukrainian). Then, everyone is welcome to rethink and experiment with this craft and material to create something new and open-ended together.
We hope this cross-cultural encounter will inspire everyone to share their personal stories and stimulate conversations and reflections. While pavuk is an old European tradition known besides Ukraine in Germany, Poland, Sweden, Finland, and Lithuania, among others, for many Ukrainians today, the folk-art revival trend is about the rediscovering their own history.
This workshop is part of the Zatyshok/Gezelligheid Project aimed at raising the visibility of Ukrainian culture, funded by the Culture of Solidarity Fund of the European Cultural Foundation, in partnership with Goethe-Institut Amsterdam, Czech Centre Rotterdam, L’Institut français, and DutchCulture, running from November 2023-January 2024 with workshops, an exhibit and talks.
