Diccionario del español de Panamá – Book presentation (Instituto Cervantes)

This year marks the 200th anniversary of the independence of Panama from the Kingdom of Spain. To acknowledge such historical happening, the Instituto Cervantes wishes to present the contributions that Panama has made to the Spanish language through its historical-cultural evolution.

The Panamanian writer Márgarita Vásquez , will present virtually, from Panama, the second edition of her work Spanish Dictionary of Panama. During a conversation with the head of the department of Spanish linguistics at the University of Utrecht, Dorien Nieuwenhuijsen, she will review the curious development of Panamanian Spanish.

Margarita J. Vásquez Quirós is a writer, member of the Panamanian Academy of the Language, and substitute Director of the corporation since June 16, 2021. Master in Hispanic American Literature and specialist in Panamanian Literature from the University of Panama, she is a practicing professor at the University of Panama. Her works include El habla del panameño (1980); Duplicaciones o el vaivén de la mecedora, approach to a book of stories by Enrique Jaramillo Levi (1998); History and fiction in the so-called chronicles of the conquest (2000). She obtained, among other acknowledgments, the Rodrigo Miró Grimaldo Essay Prize, awarded by the University of Panama in 2001, for her work Acechanzas a la literatura panameña. An essay with five questions and one hope.

Dorien Nieuwenhuijsen is Professor and Head of the Department of Spanish Linguistics at Utrecht University.
